"Blue April" Shines Spotlight on Autism in Ivory Coast

Abidjan, April 4, 2024 – Big moves in the mental health space, folks! Our Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage, Pierre Dimba, just kicked off a nationwide autism awareness campaign called "Blue April." This ain't just talk – it's part of our National Mental Health Program (PNSM).
Since it's coming up on World Autism Day, the theme for "Blue April" is all about transforming challenges into opportunities for folks with autism.

Ivory Coast's Autism Game Plan

Minister Dimba gave us the lowdown on what's been happening with autism care.  We've got a  Reference Center for Autism in Children at the National Institute of Public Health in Abidjan (INSP) – these folks are autism specialists!
But here's the good stuff: we're taking autism care beyond the capital. Since 2023, we've been working to get autism screening and support into our ten regional health centers. This way, more families across the country can get the help they need.

Boosting Autism Care for Everyone

Ivory Coast ain't just focused on specialized care. We're also leveling up our everyday healthcare folks – doctors, nurses, midwives, the whole crew. New guidelines help them spot autism early and get families connected to the right resources.
We're also getting more speech therapists out there, especially in those regional health centers. The goal? Every major health hub staffed with autism specialists by 2025. Plus, midwives and nurses are getting special training in child mental health and conditions like autism. This is huge for catching issues early and supporting families.

The Need for Autism Awareness in Ivory Coast

Listen up, estimates say 'bout 1% of young folks here in Ivory Coast have autism. That's roughly 225,000 kids!  "Blue April" is about raising awareness and making sure these kids aren't left behind.

Côte d'Ivoire Joins the Global Movement

Since 2007, the United Nations has made April 2nd World Autism Awareness Day.  "Blue April" is our way of joining that global push for understanding and making a real difference for folks with autism.
