Côte d'Ivoire Prioritizes Literacy and Non-Formal Education

ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire – The Ivorian government is making a bold commitment: every citizen will have access to literacy and lifelong learning opportunities. This pledge was reaffirmed by Dr. Alain Laurent Aboa, representative of the Minister of National Education and Literacy, at the launch of a workshop focused on literacy and non-formal education policies.

Workshop Drives Collaboration for Literacy

The Ministry of National Education and Literacy (MENA) organized the workshop, which runs until April 11th.  Its goal is ambitious:  to create a strong framework guiding government and non-governmental organizations in their literacy and non-formal education efforts. This push aims to bolster both Côte d'Ivoire's literacy rate and its overall human development.
"Every citizen deserves literacy and lifelong learning. It's the right thing, and it's the smart thing for sustainable development," asserted Dr. Aboa, representing Minister Mariatou Koné.  "The Minister cares deeply about this issue and is closely following this workshop for results."

Overcoming Illiteracy: A National Challenge for Côte d'Ivoire

Dr. Aboa acknowledged the successes the nation has seen, but emphasized, "We still have a long way to go with illiteracy in Côte d'Ivoire." This echoes the sentiments of Dr. Yves Souhan Séa, director of MENA's literacy department, who highlighted the transformative power of literacy and non-formal education for both individuals and communities.

Intersectoral Unit: A New Approach to Literacy and Non-Formal Education

A key outcome of the workshop is the creation of an intersectoral unit dedicated to literacy and non-formal education.  This unit demonstrates  Côte d'Ivoire's focus on ensuring every citizen, regardless of background, has the chance to learn.

Why Literacy Matters More Than Ever

In an increasingly knowledge-driven world, literacy and the ability to continue learning throughout life are critical for both personal and economic advancement.  Côte d'Ivoire's initiative recognizes this, positioning the nation to better equip its citizens to thrive in the 21st century.
